Grape Vine Training

Spread the love

Vines need something to grow along, be it as simple as a fence. Vines can be grown along trellis, a fence, a wall, up a pergola or along supported wires. Growing vines across the top of a pergola is very popular, as they can be trained up the side supports and then trained across the top, so that the grapes grow down from the roof spars.

If you are growing your vine in a green house, the usual method is to plant the vine roots outside of the actual green house. This is done because vines like their roots to be in the cool. The vine is then trained into the green house itself. This gives the benefit of the warm environment in the green house to the upper vine and the cool outside ground for the roots.

When planting multiple vines, they usually need between 6 and 8 feet space between them. If you are planting multiple vines they are usually trained on layers of horizontal wires, supported on strong wooden posts.

To grow vines for wine there are several pruning and support recongnised methods. Here are a couple of commomly used methods.
