Gewurztraminer

One of my favourite grape varieties, it is a white grape with an aromatic fruity taste. It may not be to everyones taste but it can make a lovely slightly dry spice wine that goes very well with game, red meat and cheese.

Grenache

This variety is one of the most widely plant red grape. This grape likes hot and dry conditions, like Spain and southern France and yhose isnt really suited for growing outside in the UK. You may have some luck growing in a greenhouse though. The wine the grape produces has fruity notes, with a slight pepper spice.

Merlot

This variety is planted across the world and produces a dark purple red wine. The wine is medium alcohol with the notes of red fruit and berries. It is a very popular wine and the vines again appreciated a warm climate, so a green house is the best bet.

Nebbiolo

This is a famous red Italian grape variety. The grape produces a light red wine with a complex mix of flavours including floural fruity notes. If the wine is allowed to mature, the flavour continue to develop into a complex mix of tannins and red fruit flavours. These flavours balance out better with age. This variety does need the warmth though.

Pinot Grigio / Pinot Gris

Again this grape is very popular and is grown around the world. The variety is a white grape and gives flavours including tropical fruit such as melon, mango and passion fruit. This grape needs warmth and will need the help of a greenhouse to bare fruit.

Pinot Noir

This variety is grown in cooler climates around the world and so lends itself better for growing in the UK. This variety is used a lot in French and Italian wine. Young wines made from this variety have red fruit aromas and flavours of raspberry and strawberries. More mature wines are more complex in nature.

Riesling

This white grape variety is linked with German wine and has an floural aromatic aromas and is known for high acidity. It is a very versatile grape and is used for the whole spectrum of white wines. It can be grown in cooler climates and can if you are in warm area of the UK, the vine can bare fruit when grown outside.

Sauvignon Blanc

This grape is green in colour and is widely plant around the world. The wine produced is refershing crisp and dry. Depending on the climate you have the flavour can range from meadow grass to sweet tropical notes. A greenhouse would be the best approach for this variety in the uk.

Shiraz

This dark skinned variety is again grown throughout the world for the production of red wine. This variety can produce a medium body red wine in moderate climates and a full bodied wine in hotter climates. Again for the UK a greenhouse would be the best bet for this variety.
