Orchid Types

Spread the love

If you have just bought your first orchid from a supermarket or garden centre it is probabaly a Phalaenopsis. These are very common in supermarkets etc and usually reasonable priced. They are sometimes called the moth orchid.

They come in a range of different colours and all have a similar growth habit. Usually upto about five flat leaves, with one or two floweing stems growing between them. Each flowering stem can hold up to about a dozen flowers each.

These types are good for beginners as they will flower on and off during the year and are quite resilient.

Catasetum Orchids

This type of orchid can be recognised by their unusually waxy flowers. There is a wide variation in appearance of these deciduous orchids, which mau have their leaves turn yellow and drop off during the winter period.

They appreciate diffused indoor light or partial shade outdoors.

Brassavola Orchids

These orchids have greenish or white fragrant flowers. With their small narrow petals, the flowers release their fragrance more in the evening. Again these orchids are well suited to beginners.

They appreciate bright indoor light or bright outdoor shade.
