There’s several things you need to consider when selecting the variety of tomato you are going to grow,

These are :-

  • Size
  • Taste
  • Cordon or bush type
  • Colour

Alicante

These tomatoes are of the cordon type and have a bright red skin. They are of medium size, with a good full bodied texture and taste. The variety has good tollerance to disease and is good outside or in the green house. These tomatoes have an average size and a good taste.

Amateur

These tomatoes are of the bush type and have a red skin and are a reliable cropper. This variety has been grown in the UK for a long time as can be replied upon even in a typical UK summer.

Black Russian

Some may not like the dark brown colour of this variety. The tomatoes are a good size and have good flavour and texture. The texture lends itself well for slicing.

Gardeners Delight

These are cordon type tomatoes and are on the smaller side. They have a glossy red skin and are juicy and sweet. This is a very popular variety and is probably the most planted in the UK.

Moneymaker

These are cordon type tomatoes and are a very reliably productive variety. A lot of gardeners rely on this variety to crop some tomatoes even in bad weather and poor soil. The tast is average, but they can make a nice sauce.

Beef Tomato

As the name suggests these are some of the largest tomatoes available. They are a favourite for home growers due to their size and mild taste. These are used often in salads and for pizza toppings etc. One of the favourite salads using these large tomatoes is the mozzerella and beef tomaoto salads.

Better Boy

This variety is well known for being a great cropper. The tomato has a good flavour and a good size too. They are easy to grow, but because of the heavy cropping, the plants need to be well supported with stakes.

Campari

This variety is a little larger than a Cherry Tomato and it is known for being sweet and juicy. This bright red variety is becomming more and more popular and is often the variety you can buy in the shops.
