A year in the life of a grape vine is very similar for both wine and desert types. There are differences depending on the age of the vine, however the year generally proceeds as follows.
Winter:-
A time for the vine to rest. Once autumn has moved into winter and the first frosts hit, the vine will look dead, not even any traces of new buds. However as the winter progresses into early spring, small lumps will start to appear on the vine. These delicate little things are the buds for the coming year, and they can be susceptible to the frost. There isnt a lot you can do to protect them in reality.
As the days grow longer and the sun warms the vine these buds will break and the new shoots will appear, these will grow quickly. The new growth will have a lovely fresh green colour.
